Abstract
A composition which yields phosphine on contact with water or humidity comprises at least one finely-powdered metal phosphide, e.g. calcium phosphide, magnesium phosphide or preferably aluminum phosphide and at least one substance which decomposes in the air at a temperature below 100 DEG C., preferably with evolution of carbon dioxide, for example, sodium bicarbonate, ammonium carbonate, ammonium carbamate, urea or urea substitution products.ALSO:A pesticide consists of a tablet containing at least one finely powdered metal phosphide capable of being decomposed by water or humidity with evolution of phosphine e.g. calcium phosphide, magnesium phosphide or preferably aluminium phosphide, and at least one substance which decomposes in the air at a temperature below 100 DEG C. preferably with evolution of carbon dioxide e.g. sodium bicarbonate, ammonium carbonate, ammonium carbamate, urea or urea substitution products. The pesticide may contain 10 to 65 per cent preferably 33 to 55 per cent of the decomposable substance and the phosphide may have an average particle diameter of less than 6.10-2cm. preferably less than 1.5.10-2cm.
