Abstract

729,154. Rotary engines. ROLLS-ROYCE, Ltd. Aug. 20, 1953 [Aug. 21, 1952], No. 21066/52. Class 110 (2). [Also in Group XXIX] A fluid - operated rotary servomotor device comprises a casing 10, 12, 13 having a sun member 14 therein which is provided with three angularlystaggered segmental gears 15, 16, 17 respectively adapted to mesh'with three planet-wheels 38, 37, 36 of different size; the member 10 constituting an annular gear 11. The sun member has a central bore 21 and a side bore 22 having a gap 26 with which two opposed ducts 27, 28 communicate. An arm 23 is journalled within the bore 21 and has a flange 25 which projects into the gap 26. The gap 26. and the bore 22 are connected to a duct 29 which communicates with a space 41 between the gears 37, 38. Pressure fluid is fed to a space 39 by a pump, to the inlet of which the space 41 is connected; the space 40 between the pinions 36, 38 being supplied through the duct 28 under the control of the arm 23. The sum of the radii of the gears 15, 17 is twice that of the gear 16 so that the sun member will tend to stabilize in the position in which the pressure within the space 40 is half that within the space 39. The arm 23 may be rotated by a shaft 32; independently of the sun member; the latter member having an output drive pinion 20.
