Abstract

A refractory composition consists of cemented particles of at least one major ingredient and an additional ingredient compressed and heated between 1200 DEG -2500 DEG C. whereby a liquid phase of some of the substances of the ingredients is formed, the major ingredient consisting of a boride or a boride and a carbide of at least one of the metals zirconium, titanium, tungsten, molybdenum, vanadium and chromium, and which contains 2-50 per cent of boron which forms the metal boride, the additional ingredient consisting of an excess of boron above that combining into the boride, the said excess constituting 2 to 25 per cent of the composition. Preferably, the composition analyses, in percentages, carbon 3-12; boron 15-35; and metal 53-82.ALSO:A refractory composition consists of cemented particles of at least one major ingredient and an additional ingredient compressed and heated between 1200 DEG -2500 DEG C. whereby a liquid phase of some of the substances of the ingredients is formed, the major ingredient consisting of a boride or a boride and a carbide of at least one of the metals of zirconium, titanium, tungsten, molybdenum, vanadium and chromium, and which contains 2 to 50 per cent of boron which forms the metal boride, the additional ingredient consisting of an excess of boron above that combining into the metal boride, the said excess of boron constituting 2 to 25 per cent by weight of the composition. Preferably the composition analyses, in percentages, carbon 3-12; boron (total) 15-35; and metal 53-82. The ingredients are finely ground in a ball-mill under an oxidation suppressing cover of a bath of saturated hydrocarbons, in an inert gas, and the preferred particle size is 2 microns or less.
