Abstract

Powdered aluminium alloy compositions containing 5-15 weight per cent of iron with 1-5 weight per cent of at least one refractory metal selected from Ti, Zr, Hf, Nb, Mo, W, Cr and/or V or mixtures thereof, are produced by rapidly solidifying a molten material at a rate of at least 10<5> DEG C/second, to give a particulate material with an aluminium solid solution matrix containing a fine dispersion of strengthening particles based on Al3Fe where a portion of the Fe content is replaced by one or more of the aforementioned refractory elements. Articles made from the powder alloy of the invention have mechanical properties significantly higher than those of conventional aluminium alloys.
