Abstract

531.077. Abrasive materials. CUTANIT, Ltd. May 26, 1939, No. 15765. Convention date, May 27, 1938. [Class 70] An abrasive material, suitable for grinding, turning, or boring tools, consists of powdery diamonds embedded in a matrix consisting of at least one carbide of titanium, tantalum, or niobium plus a metal of the iron group, the balance consisting of tungsten carbide. For preference titanium carbide (1.5 to 16 per cent.) and 9 to 15 per cent. of the metal are used for the matrix, the diamond powder constituting from 5 to 25 per cent. by weight thereof, according to the purpose for which the material is required. The constituents may all be assembled in powdery form, shaped and pressed, and heated under pressure at a relatively low sintering temperature, i.e. below 1600‹C. Alternatively, the diamond powder or " bort " may be added to a comminuted, sintered, mixture of the other constituents, the mixture thus obtained being pressed to shape and re-sintered. According to the Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91, the carbides of vanadium, zirconium, and chromium may also be employed, cobalt being preferably selected as the metal. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
