Abstract
728,724. Generating combustion products under pressure. HEIZMOTOREN GES. July 2, 1953 [July 5, 1952], No. 18378/53. Class 51 (1). In an oscillating column type of combustion equipment having a combustion chamber 1 and an exhaust pipe 3, a surge chamber 2 is connected at the outlet end of the exhaust pipe, the crosssectional area of the exhaust pipe being given by the formula: where VK = volume of combustion chamber. VS = volume of surge chamber. L . = length of exhaust pipe. The ratio VS/VK is greater than 3. The combustion chamber 1 has a mixing duct 4 supplied with air through a check valve 5 and fuel from a carburetter 7, the initial ignition being caused by a glow plug 13. In another embodiment, a second surge chamber is connected in series with the first, the length of the pipe interconnecting the two surge chambers being equal to a quarter of the wave length of the natural frequency of the resonator. The exhaust pipe from the second surge chamber has a length equal to half the wave length of the natural frequency of the resonator and having openings at its midpoint, a chamber surrounding the exhaust tube around these openings. In a further embodiment, the combustion chamber and exhaust pipe are enclosed in a jacket through which cooling air flows, the jacket extending beyond the outlet end of the exhaust pipe to form the surge chamber, the cooling air being drawn through the jacket by an injector effect.
