Abstract
728,011. Brushes for dynamo-electric machines. SPERRY GYROSCOPE CO., Ltd. Nov. 13, 1953 [Jan. 1, 1953], No. 23/53. Class 35. In order to reduce sparking between a brush and slow moving electrical contacts with which the brush is arranged to make contact, the contact surface of the brush is so shaped that its contact resistance increases towards its trailing tips. This can be achieved by making the brush trailing edge with a concave 4 with horns 6, 7 at which the final current break takes place. By making both opposite edges concave as in Fig. 1, the brush 1 would be suitable for both directions of rotation of the contact carrier 2. The resistance of the trailing part of the brush can be further increased by using a laminated brush wherein the resistance of the brush sections increases from the middle one to the end ones, thus sections 10, 14 would have the highest resistance. The brush may also be laminated in a direction at right angles to the direction shown, with the lowest resistance zone midway across the concave edges. The brush sections may or may not be of the same material.
