Abstract

Alkyl aryl sulphonic acids are rendered substantially neutral by a process comprising contacting a finely divided stream of the acid with a finely divided stream of an aqueous solution of alkali metal carbonate in substantially equivalent proportions, the contacting being effected in the upper part of a tower into which the two streams are passed through separate nozzles provided closely together. The two nozzles may be arranged side by side at the top of the tower with their outlets directed towards each other or the nozzles may be arranged concentrically. Gases comprising liberated carbon dioxide, air used to atomize the reactants and entrained sulphonates or sulphonic acids, issue from the tower top and are washed in a scrubber by a circulating water stream a portion of which, containing the sulphonates or sulphonic acids is intermittently or continuously withdrawn and added to the neutralized sulphonate solution collecting at the bottom of the neutralizer-tower, fresh make-up water being added to the washing system. The neutralized solution may be withdrawn to a second vessel where its pH may be adjusted to desired value by means of alkali metal hydroxide or carbonate or sulphonic or sulphuric acid. An example describes the neutralization of a C10-mono alkyl benzene sulphonic acid with aqueous sodium carbonate.
