Abstract

Cation-exchange resins containing sulphonic acid groups and possibly carboxylic acid groups and having a sulphur content of from 2 to 5 per cent are made by heating aliphatic polymers and copolymers at a temperature of 200-250 DEG C. for some hours with concentrated sulphuric acid. Specified polymers are polyvinyl alcohol, polyvinyl chloride, polyvinyl acetate, polyvinyl ethyl ether, polymerized acrolein, polymethyl acrylate, and a copolymer of allyl acetate and maleic anhydride.
