Abstract
In the preparation of maleuric acid maleic anhydride and urea are reacted in a solvent for both reactants at a temperature in the range from about 20 DEG C. to about 80 DEG C., said solvent consisting in a saturated aliphatic monocarboxylic acid having not more than four carbon atoms. Preferably the maleic anhydride is reacted with urea in the molten liquor from a previous operation. In examples: maleuric acid is obtained by heating maleic anhydride and urea in glacial acetic acid (1) and (5) and batches of maleuric acid are obtained carrying out the reaction in a reaction medium which is the molten liquor from a previous reaction (2)-(4).
