Abstract

726,986. Piston packing. PERFECT CIRCLE CORPORATION. March 10, 1953, No. 6557/53. Class 122 (1). An expander and positioning member for a piston-ring 60, particularly an oil-scraper ring, comprises a row of segments 62 for expanding the ring and a circumferentially self-expanding structure 63 connecting the segments and bearing axially against the ring to position it against one side of a ring-groove in a piston. A split spring-ring 60 may be held against each side of the groove by the split expander which has flanges 64 on the segments and is made flexible by slots 61 extending alternately from each of its sides, the ends of the expander being in abutment. The expander may be made from resilient metal and the rings from steel.
