In a machine wherein tobacco is compacted into cigarette shape by a sliding member 9 actuated by a system of connecting rods 14, 14<1>, 18 forming a pair of jointed parallelograms, and is then ejected by a plunger 11 into a tube 12 on which a cigarette paper tube is held by a movable finger 36, the parallelogram linkage is actuated by a rotatable cam 21 having a groove 32 and a cam face 33 which act in succession on a roller 20 attached to the rod 18 and the plunger 11 is actuated through a spring- loaded lever 24 by pins 30, 31 on the cam 21, the finger 36 being carried by a three-armed lever 34 spring biased to the tube engaging position and having arms 38, 40 adapted to be engaged respectively by one of the rods 14 and by the lever 24 to move the finger 36 to release the cigarette tube at appropriate times. In Fig. 4 the compacting member 9 and the plunger 11 are in the retracted position to allow tobacco to be inserted through an aperture 8, Fig. 2, into the tobacco receiving compartment 4 and the arm 38 of the lever 34 is engaged by a rod 14 to lift the finger 36 and allow a cigarette tube to be fitted on the tube 12. Clockwise rotation of the cam 21 by the handle 23, Fig. 1, causes the roller 20 to be moved by the slot 32 to move the compacting member 9 to press the tobacco into shape. During further rotation the cam face 33 causes the toggle mechanism to move beyond its centre point to release the pressure on the tobacco slightly, and the pin 30 contacts the lever 24 to move the plunger 11 to eject the tobacco through the tube 12. Shortly before the end of the plunger stroke, the lever 24 contacts the arm 40 of the lever 34 to raise the finger 36 and release the finished cigarette. Specification 464,948 is referred to.
