Abstract

675,973. Soldering and brazing. HERSEE, L. R. June 26, 1950 [June 25, 1949], No. 16915/49. Class 83 (iv). A soldering-iron has a trigger connected to solder gripping means constituted by two parts which embrace the solder and which are movable relatively with a controlled movement for gripping the solder so that complete penetration is avoided and means associated with the trigger engage the gripping means after the relative movement is completed to move the gripping means and the solder bodily to feed the solder towards the bit and means for withdrawing the solder from the bit during part of the return movement of the feed mechanism are provided. A member 15 provides guides 16, 17 for the solder 10 wound over a reel 37, and provides rails 13 and 14 (not shown) on which the gripping means 11 slide. The means 11 comprises a U-shaped saddle 21 within which the solder 10 is located above a cam 25 mounted on a pivot 24 extending between the legs of the U, and through pieces 22 and 23 (not shown) sliding in slots 18 in the member 15. A connecting-rod 28 pivoted at 27 to the cam 25 and at 29 to a trigger 8 supported at 30 on the casing and urged by a spring 35 into the inoperative positions, carries a lug 31 which in the inoperative position has clearance from the saddle 21. A spring 19 mounted on a rod 33 slidable in the guide 15 is attached at one end to the guide 15 and at the other end to a cylinder 32 sliding in the slots 18. In operation, the trigger 8 is pressed to push the rod 28 forward and rotate the cam 25 to grip the solder 10. The gripping of the solder 10 is completed when the lug 31 has moved sufficiently to engage the saddle 21. Further trigger pressure moves the saddle 21 and solder gripped therein forward until at about half the forward travel the cam 25 engages the cylinder 32 to compress the spring 19. On release of the trigger 8 the spring 19 initially prevents rotation of the cam 25 so that the solder is withdrawn during part of the return travel of the saddle 21. Finally the cam is allowed to rotate to release the solder 10 when the saddle 21 slides relative to the solder into the inoperative position. Specification 656,766 is referred to.
