Abstract

801,436. Crimping tools. AMP, Inc. Nov. 10, 1954 [Nov. 10, 1953], No. 32520/54. Class 61. A hand tool for crimping electrical connectors comprises a crimping head 24 having a fixed die mounted therein, a reciprocating plunger mounted in the head and carrying a second die, and a pair of handles of which one is fixed to and the other is pivoted to the head, a link being pivoted to the pivoted handle at a point spaced from its pivoted end and being pivoted also at one end to the plunger, the various pivots being so arranged that (a) relative movement of the handles reciprocates the plunger, and (b) the pivoted end of the pivoted handle and the pivoted end of the link, when the handles are closed, are closer to the dies than is the connection between the link and pivoted handle. As shown in Fig. 1 the crimping tool comprises a handle 26 having a crimping head 24 in the form of a U-shaped housing 46. Within the housing is a locator mechanism supporting block 48, Fig. 13, and guide plates (not shown) these being secured to the housing by rivets 62, 64. Between the block and plates is a slidable plunger 32 fitted with a wire crimping die 38 and an insulating crimping die 40, Fig. 14. These two dies co-operate with moulds 42, 44, Fig. 9, mounted on a block 60 also fitted to the crimping head. The mould 42 is fixed but the mould 44 is adjustably mounted in a groove 68 of the block. The body 66 of the mould 44 bears against either the periphery of a pin 70 or against one of two flats 80, 82 of the pin. To adjust the position of the mould the pin 70 is pushed upwards against spring pressure and rotated to the required position and then released, an arm 74 on the pin then resting in one of three slots 76 in the block 60 thus holding the mould in the adjusted position. The locator 86 has a shaft which passes through the locator block 48 and through a pivoted lever 100 the latter being movable by hand to retract the locator against the action of a spring mounted within the locator block. When the lever is released the spring urges the locator so that a projection 116, Fig. 20, thereon engages in an indentation 118 in a tubular connector and its flange 114 bears against the wall of the connector. A pin 58 extending from the block 48 passes through a slot in the slide 32 and also through the limbs 28a, 28b of the other handle 28 of the tool. Pivoted at 53 to the slide 32 is a link 52 which is connected by a pin 56 to the handle 28. A spring 120 normally urges the lever 52 in a clockwise direction. When it is desired to affect a crimping operation the lever 52 is first of all moved in an anticlockwise direction against the action of the spring ; this serves to advance the plunger 32 until the crimping dies are in contact with the connector. Due to the relative dispositions of the pivots 53, 56, 58 these movements of the plunger and lever serve to effect a slight closing movement of the handles 26, 28. The tool is so constructed that a slight closing movement of the handle causes a ratchet 30 to become engaged ; thus when the link 52 has been moved to a position in which its finger piece 126 is flush with handle 28 it cannot be rotated clockwise by its spring 120 until after the handles have been fully closed and the ratchet 30 has become disengaged. Specifications 750,047, 801,437 and 801,438 are referred to.
