Abstract

1,022,508. Stamping. AMP Inc. Oct. 8, 1964 [Oct. 18, 1963; Feb. 26, 1964], No 41022/64. Heading B3Q. A crimping &c. press comprises a movable die 28, Fig. 1 carried, and guided by, a pair of flexible cantilever beams 14, 16 connected together at both ends, and means for moving the die 28 towards a fixed die 89 so as to flex the beams. The dies may crimp the ferrules B, Fig. 3 (not shown), of electrical connector A to wires, the connectors being connected to one or two strips D. The die 28 is fixed to a shank 32, Fig. 3 (not shown), held releasably in a holder 24 by a pin 36 which passes through a retaining spring 38. A link 42 connects the holder 24 to a spacer 44 between plates 46, 48 (Fig. 3) mounted on a pivot 52 and located between outer plates 4, 6. An upper track 59 is fixed between the outer plates 4, 6 and a lower, convergent track 54 between the inner, pivoted plates 46, 48. Operating between the tracks to lower the lower track and thus the top die 28 is a pair of rolls 60, 62 traversed by a lead screw 80 the nut 78 of which may include balls or rolls. Drive for the screw is by a reversing motor 88 with a printed-circuit armature. The motor is reversed by a control circuit at the end of the working stroke of the die when a shutter 97, Fig. 5 (not shown), carried by the shaft 64 of roller 60, passes through a light beam energizing a photocell 94. The cell 94 is adjustable by means of a screw 98 to adjust the die-stroke. At the end of the return travel of the rolls 60, 62, the plates 46, 48 and die 28 are returned to the raised position by cam action of rolls 114, Fig. 7 (not shown), in the downturned ends 119 of cam openings 116 in the plates 46, 48. The rolls 116 are mounted on the shaft 64, which carries further rolls 112 in openings 117 in the outer plates 4, 6, and additional rolls 118, 120, for operating a feeding device. A switch 90 associated with the feed-nut stops the motor 88 at the end of a return stroke. The motor may be started by a foot switch or a switch operated by positioning between the dies a wire to be crimped to a connector. Shearing.-A shear blade 150, Fig. 6 (not shown), is operated by the die-holder 24 against the action of a return spring to sever the connectors A from the strip D. Strip feeding.-The strip is fed by pawls 135, 138 (Fig. 6) engaging holes in the strip. The pawls are carried by levers mounted on pivots 146 and connected by a link 148. An arm 152 on lever 141 engages the forked end 130 of a bell crank lever 122, Fig. 4 (not shown), which is linked by a spring 134 to another bell crank lever 124. This has an upper cam surface engaged by the roller 118, and a projection 126 engaging lever 122. During a crimping stroke, lever 124 is turned anti-clockwise by roller 118, causing clockwise rotation of lever 122 and return movement of the pawls 135, 138 to the left (Fig. 6). Before the pawls pivot out of the holes E in the strip, this is moved slightly until arrested by a fixed pawl 164. At the end of the return movement of the pawls, they engage further holes in the strip so that this is advanced, at the end of the return stroke of the top die, when roller 120 engages the end of lever 122, causing it to pivot anti-clockwise. A damping plunger 131 stops movement of the lever 122.
