7 Claims. (Cl. 131-70) The present invention relates to a cigarette making machine and more particularly to a manually operated cigarette making machine` of the portable or domestic t e.
ypThe machine, according to the invention, is of the type in which tobacco is fed by hand into a tobacco receiving chamber and is compacted and ejected into a cigarette paper tube by a single rotary movement of a suitable handle.
Machines of this type usually comprise a straight plunger adapted to enter the tobacco receiving chamber for ejecting the same into the cigarette tube. These machines require a plurality of actuating parts in order to effect the various movements necessary for making cigarettes.
The general object of the present invention is the provision of a cigarette making machine of the above mentioned character, the construction of which has been greatly simplied and which is, therefore, much cheaper to manufacture than the present cigarette making machines of the same type.
An important object of the present invention is the provision in a cigarette making machine of the character described, of an arcuate plunger and a tobacco receiving chamber having an arcuate wall to cooperate with said plunger and with the arcuate working edge of a tobacco compacting member slidable within said 1 chamber, whereby said plunger and tobacco compacting member may be actuated through a minimum of parts.
Still another important object of the present invention is the provision of a machine of the character described which is very strong and ecient and which will give prolonged service.
The foregoing and other important objects of the present invention will become more apparent during the following disclosure and by referring to the drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the machine according to the invention.
Figure 2 is a cross-sectional elevation of the same.
Figure 3 is a section taken along line 3-3 of Figure 2.
Figures 4, 5 and 6 are sections similar to that of Figure 3 showing various stages of the operation of the machine, and
Figure 7 is a fractional cross-section along line 7-7 of Figure 3.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings in which like reference characters indicate like elements throughout, the machine comprises a base A, of plastic or other suitable material, supporting a casing B consisting of a top 1, side walls 2, a rear wall 3 and a front wall 4, the latter being curved into an arc of a circle.
Part of the front wall 4 is bent back in a semi-circle as shown at 5 in Figures 2 or 7 to form an extension lying underneath the top 1 and defining the bottom 6 of `a tobacco receiving chamber 7 communicating with the exterior through the passage 8 made in the top 1. The side edges of the bottom 6 are bent upwardly to form the sides 6 of said tobacco receiving chamber 7. A tobacco compacting member 9 is moveable back and forth within the chamber 7 from a retracted position shown in Figures 5 or 6, clearing the aperture 8, to a forward tobacco compacting position shown in Figures 3 and 4, closing the aperture 8.

When the tobacco compacting member 9 is in forward position, it delines with the bend 5 of the front wall 4 a longitudinal curved space having a circular section which is engaged by the curved plunger 11 for ejecting the compacted tobacco through the nipple 12 secured to the side wall 2 of the casing l:gud n communication with the tobacco receiving cham- The plunger 11 and tobacco compacting member 9 are actuated in the following manner.
A vertical shaft 13 is rotatably mounted in a sleeve 14 secured to the top 1 of the casing, and is actuated by a handle 15 secured to the upper end thereof. A cam 16 is secured to the shaft 13 and its outer edge is in rolling contact with the rollers 17 and 18 extend- Ving downwardly from and secured to an arm 1,9. The shaft 13 passes through a slot 20 made in the arm 19 midway between the rollers 17 and 18 whereby said arm may slide longitudinally relatively to said shaft. The arm 19 is secured at its outer end to the tobacco compacting member 9 by means of rivets 21.
Thus, rotation of the cam 16 will displace the tobacco compacting member 9 from a back retracted position to a forward tobacco engaging position and vice versa.
The plunger 11 is connected by a pivot 23 to the outer end of an arm 22 which is freely rotatable on the shaft 13 at its other end. The arm 22 may abut either one of the two downwardly extending pins 24 and 25 secured to the cam 16.
A cigarette tube retaining lever 26 is pivoted at 27 on the bottom 5 of the tobacco receiving chamber 7 and is provided with a projection 28 passing through the side wall 2 adjacent the nipple 12. A cigarette tube gripping pin 29 is secured on the projection 28 to contact the nipple 12 under the urge of the coil spring 30 connected to the lever 26 and to front wall 4 of the casing B.
A first extension 31 of the lever 26 is adapted to abut a downwardly extending pin 32 secured on the arm 19 while a second extension 33 of the lever 26 is adapted to abut a finger 34 secured to the pivot 23 and lying underneath the plunger 11.
The machine according to the invention operates as follows:
At the start of the operation, the plunger 11 is in fully retracted position as shown in Figure 3, the angular position of the cam 16 being such that the pin 25 abuts the arm 22. In this position the cam 16 has its curved portion 35 engaging the outer roller 18 of the arm 19 whereby the tobacco compacting member 9 is in its limit backward position shown in Figures 5 or 6.
Upon clockwise rotation of the shaft 13 and of the cam 16 by means of handle 15, the arm 19 and the tobacco compacting member 9 are displaced forwardly to take the tobacco compacting position shown in Figure 3. Upon further clockwise rotation of the cam 16, the pin 24 abuts the arm 22 and rotates the same to cause entrance of the plunger 11 within the chamber 7 to eject the tobacco through the nipple 12 into the cigarette tube held on the latter. Figure 4 shows the plunger 11 in extreme left position partly engaging the nipple 12. In this position the finger 34 engages the extension 33 of the cigarette tube retaining lever 26 to release the completed cigarette C, shown in Figure 1, which is ejected.
Upon return movement of the handle 15, that is upon anti-clockwise rotation of the cam 16, the tobacco compacting member 9 is immediately retracted as shown in Figure 5 and the pin 32 on the arm 19 contacts the enlarged end 36 of the extension 31 of the retaining lever 26 in order to keep the latter in cigarette tube releasing position.
Upon further anti-clockwise movement of the cam 16, the pin 25 thereof abuts the arm 22 to cause retraction of the plunger 11 as shown in Figure 6, while the tobacco compacting member 9 remains in fully retracted position.
The arms 22 and 19, and the cam 16 may be dismounted by simply unscrewing the nuts 37 and 38 from the threaded lower end of the shaft 13.
It will be noted that the center of curvature of the front wall 4, of the plunger 11 and of the front edge of the member 9, when the latter is in forward limit position, corresponds to the axis of the shaft 13.
While a preferred embodiment according to the invention has been illustrated and described it is understood that various modifications may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. A cigarette making machine comprising a casing having a longitudinally curved wall, a tobacco receiving chamber partly defined by said curved wall, a tobacco compacting member movable within said tobacco receiving chamber from a retracted position to a tobacco compacting position close to said curved Wall, a tobacco ejecting nipple in communication with said chamber adjacent said curved wall, a longitudinally curved plunger moveable from a retracted position to atobacco ejecting v position engaging said chamber alongside said curved wall for ejecting said tobacco throughY said nipple, a shaft journalled in said casing, a cam secured to said shaft, an arm secured to said tobacco compacting member and engaging said cam for longitudinal reciprocating movement, and means for actuating said plunger operable by said shaft, said actuating means including abutments secured to said cam and a second arm rotatable on said shaft between said abutments and pivotally con- .nected at its outer end to said plunger, said first arm being rotatably and slidably mounted on said shaft, and other abutments on said first arm engageable with said cam whereby rotation of the latter will displace said tobacco compacting member from a retracted position to a tobacco engaging position.
2. A cigarette making machine as claimed in claim l, wherein the center of curvature of said longitudinally curved wall corresponds to the axis of said shaft.
3. A cigarette making machine as claimed in claim l, wherein the outer working edge of said tobacco compacting member is longitudinally curved to forrnan arc of a circle for cooperating with said longitudinally curved wall during the tobacco compacting operation.
4. A cigarette making machine as claimed in claim l, wherein theportion of said curved wall defining part of said tobacco receiving chamber, has a semi-circular cross-section, and wherein the front working edge of said tobacco compacting member has a semi-circular groove, whereby a space of circular cross-section is defined by said curved wall portion and by said front edge of the tobacco compacting member when the latter is in tobacco compacting position, said space being adapted to receive said plunger.

A cigarette making machine comprising a casing having a fiat top and a longitudinally curved side Wall bent in a semi-circle and forming an extension lying 4 i underneath said top, said top having an aperture registering Ywith said extension, a tobacco compacting member moveable in a reciprocable movement between said top and said extension, said tobacco compacting member having a longitudinally curved working edge with a groove and adapted to cooperate with said longitudinally curved wall, said groove being semiacircular in crosssection to define with said longitudinally curved side wall a space of circular cross-section when said tobacco compacting member is in tobacco compacting position, a shaft rotatably mounted within said casing, a cam secured to said shaft, abutment pins secured to said cam, a first arm freely pivoted on said shaft and actuated by said abutment pins, a longitudinally curved plunger of circular cross-section pivoted to the free end of said first arm and movable from a retracted position to a position fully engaging the circular space between said curved wall and the tobacco compacting member, a second arm having an elongated slot for receiving said aXle and rigidly secured at its outer end to said tobacco compacting member, abutments on said second arm engageable with the periphery of said cam whereby rotation of said cam will displace said second arm and consequently said tobacco compacting memberfrom a retracted position to a tobacco compacting position, and a nipple in communication with said circular space for discharging the tobacco ejected by vsaid plunger.
6. A cigarette making machineas claimed in claim 5, further including a cigarette tube retaining levervpivoted on said casing and having a gripping pin adapted to come in contact with said nipple for retaining the cigarette tube thereon, said lever having a first extension adapted to come in contact with a pin mounted on said second arm for pivoting said lever into cigarette tube releasing position upon retraction of said second arm, and a second extension adapted to come into contact with a finger secured to said plunger when the latter takes its engaging position for pivoting said lever into cigarette tubev releasing position.
7. A cigarette making machine as claimed in claim 6, wherein the center of curvature of said longitudinally curved Wall and the center of curvature of the front working edge of said tobacco compacting member, when the latter is in compacting position, corresponds to the aXis of said shaft.
