Abstract

A thermosetting composition comprises a paste-like dispersion which contains a resin based on vinyl or vinylidene chloride, a plasticizer therefor and one or more amines. The resin may be polyvinyl chloride, polyvinylidene chloride, or a copolymer of vinyl chloride with vinyl acetate, vinylidene chloride, butadiene, chloroprene or isoprene. The amine is preferably a polyamine such as ethylene diamine, diethylene triamine, triethylene tetramine, tetraethylene pentamine, pentaethylene hexamine, hexamethylene tetramine, tripropylene tetramine and guanidine. Plasticizers specified are dioctyl phthalate and tricresyl phosphate and other ingredients which may be present are lead stearate, lead silicate, finely-divided silica and aluminium stearate. The compositions may be cured by heating, when crosslinking takes place, and may be used in the manufacture of belting by coating a fabric reinforcement, in the proofing of fabrics, in the manufacture of moulded articles, such as vehicle tyres and shoe soles, for lining tanks and other vessels and as a jointing material for chemical plant. Inflated products may be made by adding blowing agents to the paste composition.
