Abstract

Fibrous cords, fabrics, or the like of polymethylene terephthalates are bonded to rubber or synthetic rubber by coating the fibrous material first with a composition containing at least one homopolymer or copolymer of a vinyl or vinylidene compound, heating to fuse the coating, coating with a composition comprising a latex dispersion, drying, and carrying out the normal bonding process. The vinyl or vinylidene polymer may be polyvinyl or polyvinylidene chloride or mixtures thereof, copolymers of vinyl chloride with vinyl acetate, vinylidene chloride, or acrylonitrile, vinylidene chlorideacrylonitrile copolymer, vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate-maleic anhydride terpolymer, vinyl chloride or vinylidene chloride copolymers with other ethylenically unsaturated compounds, or mixtures of such homo- and co-polymers. The vinyl polymers may be used in solution, or as plastisols, organisols, dispersions or emulsions, and may contain, in addition to plasticizers and other adjuvants, an amine (of which a list is given in the Specification), or a quaternary substituted ammonium hydroxide, especially a polymerized linoleic acid-ethylene diamine or other polyamine condensation product, and/or triallyl cyanurate together with a peroxide catalyst. The latex dispersion may comprise a vinylpyridine polymer latex dispersed in an aqueous solution of resorcinol, phenol, or catechol, and formaldehyde. Rubber includes natural rubber, gutta percha, balata, compounded rubber, hydroxylated rubber, rubber-cyclised rubber condensation products, neoprene, butadiene-styrene and butadiene-acrylonitrile interpolymers, polysulphide rubber, rubber-like isobutylene polymers and copolymers, rubber-like alkyl acrylate-chloralkylvinylether copolymers, and chlorsulphonated polyolefins. Fibrous cords for tyres, machine belting &c., are preferably held under tension during the heating stage.ALSO:Fibrous cords, fabrics, or the like of polymethylene terephthalates are bonded to rubber or synthetic rubber by coating the fibrous material first with a composition containing at least one homopolymer of copolymer of a vinyl or vinylidene compound, heating to fuse the coating, coating with a composition comprising a latex dispersion, drying, and carrying out the normal bonding process. Polymethylene terephthalates include highly polymeric esters obtained by heating glycols containing 2-10 C atoms with terephthalic acid or a mixture of such acid with isophthalic acid, or an ester, half ester, acid halide, or ammonium or amine salt thereof. Cycloaliphatic glycols may be used. The vinyl or vinylidene polymer may be polyvinyl or polyvinylidene chloride or mixtures thereof, copolymers of vinyl chloride with vinyl acetate, vinylidene chloride, or acrylonitrile, vinylidene chloride-acrylonitrile copolymer, vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate-maleic anhydride terpolymer, vinyl chloride or vinylidene chloride copolymers with other ethylenically unsaturated compounds, or mixtures of such homo- and co-polymers. Fibrous cords for tyres, machine belting &c., are preferably held under tension during the heating stage.
