Abstract

An aqueous sizing solution for application to glass fibre filaments comprises a latex of a polymer of an ethylenic monomer as a binder, an alkenyl acyloxy silane as a coupling agent and a textile softener for the glass filaments, the alkenyl acyloxy silane being used in combination with gamma-amino-propyltriethoxy silane and, if desired, a water soluble melamineformaldehyde resin. Latex polymers specified are polyvinyl acetate, polymers of C1-C6 aliphatic acrylates and methacrylates, e.g. polymethyl methacrylate, copolymers of butadiene with styrene or acrylonitrile, polyvinyl chloride, polystyrene, vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymers and polymers of chlorovinyl acetate, butadiene acrylonitrile and vinylidene chloride. As an alkenyl acyloxy silane there is specified vinyltriacetoxy silane. Textile softeners specified are amides of C4-C24 fatty acids, including acid solubilized polymers of the lower molecular weight unsaturated amides, and the alkyl imidazoline derivatives formed by reacting fatty acids with polyalkylene polyamines, e.g. the reaction product of stearic acid and tetraethylene pentamine. Also present in the size may be a wetting agent, such as cetylamine or stearylamine hydrochloride or acetate, dodecylamine, hexadecylamine, dodecylmethylamine and salts thereof, trimethyl stearyl or cetyl ammonium bromides and chlorides and polyoxyethylene sorbitan monostearate or trioleate and a plasticizer for the polymer, e.g. dibutyl, dioctyl and diisooctyl phthalates and tricresyl phosphate. Specification 919,318 is referred to.ALSO:Glass fibre strands are sized by applying thereto an aqueous sizing composition comprising an emulsion polymerization latex of an ethylenic monomer as a binder, an alkenyl acyloxy silane as a coupling agent, and a textile softener for the glass fibre filaments, the alkenyl acyloxy silane being used in combination with gamma-amino-propyltriethoxy silane and, if desired, with a water-soluble melamine-formaldehyde resin, and then drying the glass fibres so-treated. The examples describe the following compositions for application to glass fibres: (1) polyvinyl acetate latex with acetic acid-solubilized pelargonic amide, vinyl triacetoxysilane and gamma-amino-propyl triethoxysilane, (2) as in (1) but containing also a water-soluble melamine-formaldehyde resin, (3) butadiene-styrene copolymer latex with vinyl triacetoxysilane, gamma-amino-propyl-triethoxysilane and the methacrylic acid-solubilized tetraethylene pentamine amide of stearic acid, and (4) polymethyl methacrylate latex, vinyl triacetoxysilane, gamma-amino-propyl triethoxysilane and a solubilized fatty acid amide. Also present may be wetting agents, plasticizers and alternative latices and softeners (see Group IV(a)). Specification 919,318 is referred to.
