Abstract

Resinous compositions suitable for use as adhesives comprise a polymer or copolymer of vinyl chloride in which has been incorporated 0.25-10.0 per cent of an alkylene polyamine of formula NH2(CR2CR2NH)nH, where R independently in each occurrence in the expanded formula may be H or CH3, C2H5 or C3H7 and n an integer from 1-5. Suitable vinyl chloride copolymers are obtained by polymerization with a minor proportion of vinyl acetate, formate, propionate, fluoride or bromide, methyl methacrylate, acrylonitrile, butadiene, chloroprene, isoprene, 2.3-dichlorobutadiene, vinyl ethyl ether, vinyl methyl ketone or vinyl butyl thioether. Specified polyamines are ethylene diamine, diethylene triamine, triethylene tetramine, tetraethylene tetramine, tetraethylene pentamine, pentaethylene hexamine and tripropylene tetramine. The adhesives are conveniently prepared in solution, specified solvents are methyl isobutyl, methyl isopropyl and methyl ethyl ketones, cyclohexanone and nitroparaffins. They may be used for bonding metals, textiles, paper, fibre board and other elastomeric materials, being particularly useful in uniting metals to elastomers. The tensile strength, flexibility and resistance to solvents of the composition is improved by curing. The compositions may also be used for coatings, mouldings and the fabrication of fuel resistant hose and containers. Ingredients which may also be present in the composition include plasticizers, e.g. dioctyl phthalate, di-(butoxyethyl) phthalate, reinforcing agents, e.g. carbon black, fillers, e.g. magnesia, magnesium carbonate, titanium dioxide, butadiene - acrylonitrile copolymers, calcium stearate, carnauba wax and diallyl phthalate.
