Abstract

Vulcanizable rubber modified plastisols comprise (a) a dispersion of a vinyl chloride polymer in at least one plasticizer in which the polymer is substantially insoluble at room temperature and (b) a synthetic rubber, the proportion of rubber to polymer being 10:90 to 50:50 by weight and said dispersion not having been gelled in the absence of synthetic rubber. The polymer may be polyvinyl chloride or a copolymer of vinyl chloride with vinylidene chloride, vinyl acetate, styrene, butadiene, chloroprene, isoprene or acrylonitrile. Specified plasticizers are dioctyl phthalate, dioctyl adipate, dioctyl sebacate, tritolyl phosphate, trixylyl phosphate, polypropylene sebacate and polypropylene adipate. The synthetic rubber may be polychloroprene or a polysulphide rubber. The compositions may also comprise polyesters, amides, polyamides, stabilizers, extenders, anti-static agents, flame resistant agents, pigments and vulcanizing ingredients. The compositions may be applied to textile fabrics and cured to give materials suitable for making conveyer belts and hose. Examples describe compositions comprising: (1) polyvinyl chloride, dioctyl phthalate, dioctyl sebacate, neoprene, zinc oxide and 2-mercaptoimidazoline, and (2) polyvinyl chloride, dioctyl phthalate, polysulphide rubber, quinone dioxime, diphenyl guanidine and sulphur.ALSO:Textile fabrics may be coated with vulcanizable rubber modified plastisols comprising (a) a dispersion of a vinyl chloride polymer in at least one plasticizer in which the polymer is substantially insoluble at room temperature and (b) a synthetic rubber, the proportion by weight of rubber to polymer being 10 : 90 to 50 : 50 and said dispersion not having been gelled in the absence of synthetic rubber. The polymer may be polyvinyl chloride or a copolymer of vinyl chloride with vinylidene chloride, vinyl acetate, styrene, butadiene, chloroprene, isoprene or acrylonitrile. Specified rubbers are polychloroprene and polysulphide rubbers. Specified plasticizers are dioctyl phthalate, adipate and sebacate; tritolyl and trixylyl phosphates; and polypropylene sebacate and adipate. The compositions may contain conventional additives and vulcanizing agents and the coated fabrics may be used in the manufacture of conveyer belts and hose. In examples textile fabrics are coated with compositions comprising polyvinyl chloride, dioctyl phthalate and (1) polychloroprene, dioctyl sebacate, zinc oxide and 2-mercapto imidazoline, and (2) polysulphide rubber, quinone dioxime, diphenyl guanidine and sulphur.
