Abstract

In a leather-like PVC plastisol coated fabric, the PVC plastisol is formulated with a polymeric plasticiser, e.g. a polyester based plasticiser. Cracking and embrittlement of the coating due to loss of plasticiser from the surface is thereby avoided.

Description

PLASTISOLS This invention relates to plastisols, in particular to the coating of fabrics with plastisols.
Existing coated fabrics based on either 100% polyvinylchloride (PVC) or 100% polyurethane (PU) coatings on knitted or woven backing fabrics have several drawbacks and perform unsatisfactorily in many respects. As a result these coated fabrics, which simulate leather but at substantially lower cost, only satisfy the requirements of minor sectors of one potential market, namely the upholstery market.
Other potential markets include protective wear such as gloves, footwear and automotive products such as seating and trims.
One of the major drawbacks is cracking and embrittlement of the coating due to loss of plasticiser from the surface of said coating.
The present invention addresses the aforementioned problem.
According to the present invention there is provided a PVC plastisol coated fabric wherein the PVC plastisol is formulated with a polymeric plasticiser.
The polymeric plasticiser may be polyester based.
The PVC plastisol may comprise a compound formulated as follows: PVC polymer (1000 parts) Polyester plasticiser (1012 parts) Epoxidised plasticiser (30 parts) Calcium-zinc stabiliser (30 parts) Moisture absorbing agent (30 parts) Carbon black pigment (21 parts) The coated fabric may be produced by a transfer method.
The fabric may be a non-woven material.
PVC plastisol coated fabrics wherein the plastisol is formulated with unconventional polymeric plasticiser may be employed in the manufacture of cost effective, aesthetically pleasing leather like products. Leather-like upholstery fabric is a particularly important potential market. The use of a polymeric plasticiser represents a significant improvement over prior art coated fabrics which employed conventional plasticiser from the surface of the coating caused cracking and hardening of said coating.
Said loss of plasticiser is inhibited by the use of a polymer. As a result, the coated fabric formed from the combination of coating and backing material displays superior performance properties (such as long term flexibility and stress-strain recovery) compared to existing coated fabrics.
The PVC plastisols formulated with polyester based plasticisers (a combination of polybasic aliphatic acids and polyhydric alcohols) have been produced successfully under commercial conditions at pilot scale.
An example of a suitable PVC compound is as follows: PVC polymer (1000 parts) Polyester plasticiser (1012 parts) Epoxidised plasticiser (30 parts) Calcium-zinc stabiliser (30 parts) Moisture absorbing agent (30 parts) Carbon black pigment (21 parts) The constituents are mixed together to form a consistent compound with a final viscosity of about 100,000 cp measured on the Brookfield viscometry system adopted by the PVC industry. The compound is subsequently vacuum-dried for 45 minutes to remove residual moisture and air bubbles.
Coated fabrics may be produced by a transfer method in which a thin coating of the plastisol is put down on release paper and dried at 1 800C. A second, thicker layer is put down on top of the first coat and whilst the surface is still wet a nonwoven backing material is placed in contact with same. The product is then dried at 1 800C before subsequent cooling and removal of the release paper to reveal the final coated fabric. Knitted or woven backing materials may also be employed; however non-woven fabrics have the potential to simulate more closely the structure of leather.
