Abstract

An adhesive comprises polyvinyl chloride, a plasticizer, a polyester capable of reacting with an isocyanate and a polymer of a polyisocyanate having at least one uretdione ring. Dioctyl phthalate is specified as plasticizer; the polyester may be derived from adipic acid and 1,6-hexane diol or butane diol with or without trimethylolpropane, and the uretdione may be obtained from toluylene - 2,4 - diisocyanate, toluene - 2,4,6 - triisocyanate, or diphenyl-methane - 4,41 - diisocyanate. There may also be present a catalyst for the decomposition of the uretdione, e.g. dibutyl tin oxide, stannous octoate, zinc adipate, triethyl phosphine, pyridine, triethylene diamine, or titanium hydroxy chloride. Diphenyl thiourea may be added as a stabilizer. The adhesive is used to bond a fibrous material, e.g. rayon, polyamide or polyester textiles, to PVC. The adhesive is spread on the textile, heated to 120-160 DEG C. to pregelatinize, spread with a PVC paste and gelatinized by heating to 160-190 DEG C. In one example, both sides of a textile are so coated with PVC.ALSO:An adhesive comprises polyvinyl chloride, a plasticiser, a polyester capable of reacting with an isocyanate and a polymer of a polyisocyanate having at least one uretdione ring. Dioctyl phthalate is specified as plasticiser; the polyester may be derived from adipic acid and 1, 6-hexane diol or butane diol with or without trimethylolpropane, and the uretdione may be obtained from toluylene-2, 4-diisocyanate, toluene-2, 4, 6-triisocyanate, or diphenylmethane-4, 4\sv-diisocyanate. There may also be present a catalyst for the decomposition of the uretdione, e.g. dibutyl tin oxide, stannous octoate, zine adipate, triethyl phosphine, pyridine, triethylene diamine, or titanium hydroxy chloride. Diphenyl thiourea may be added as a stabiliser. The adhesive is used to bond a fibrous material e.g., rayon, polyamide or polyester textiles, to PVC. The adhesive is spread on the textile, heated to 120-160 DEG C to pregelatinise, spread with a PVC paste and gelatinised by heating to 160-190 DEG C. In one example both sides of a textile are so coated with PVC.
