In a grease gun, a plunger rod 6 passes through the container 1 and has attached to it a plunger 10 that operates in a cylinder 9 formed in the nozzle 2. A follow-up piston 19 slides in the plunger rod 6 and carries spring arms 24 that co-operate with a projection 25 formed by a spring ring set in a groove 26 in the plunger rod. To fill the gun, the nozzle 2 is removed and the rod 6 is raised so that the projection 25 passes the spring arms 24 and raises the piston 19 to suck in the grease. After replacing the nozzle 2, the rod 6 is pushed inwards until the piston 19 engages the grease and upon further pressure, the piston is released from the rod. A further cup leather 27 is provided so that when the piston 19 is at the top of the container, the leather 27 is pressed by the spring 28 against the piston to assist in preventing the passage of grease past the piston.
