724,744. Compound sheet materials. ABBEY, A. (United Cotton Products Co.), June 30, 1953, No. 18168/53. Class 140. [Also in Group XXIII] A flexible abrasive-coated material from which polishing or scouring belts, discs, pads &c. can be cut, punched or otherwise made, comprises a layer of abrasive grains 6 adhesively secured, by means of a non- tacky permanent adhesive, to a composite backing, the backing comprising a layer of sponge rubber 5 adhesively bonded, by means of a non-tacky permanent adhesive, to a fibrous layer 4 of textile fibres. The fibres of the fibrous layer may be interlocked or interwoven ; alternatively or additionally they may be adhesively combined. The fibrous layer may be composed of carded cotton fibrous membranes held together and compacted by a resilient adhesive such as latex; other cloth fabrics, either woven, carded or felted, composed of various textile fibres, may be used. The fibrous layer may be made as described in Specifications 437,526 and 446,853; the carded membranes which make up the fibrous sheet material may consist of animal, vegetable, mineral or synthetic fibrous material such as cotton, wool, jute, flax, glass fibres, resinous or synthetic rubberlike fibrous materials. Two or more fibrous materials may be mixed. The fibrous layer 4 and the abrasive grains 6 may be secured to opposite faces of the sponge rubber layer 5; the sponge rubber layer 5 may have fibrous layers 4 on both faces, the abrasive grains 6 being secured to one layer 4.
