724,664. Velocity-modulated tubes. COMPAGNIE GENERALE DE TELEGRAPHIE SANS FIL. Jan. 26, 1953 [Jan. 28, 1952], No. 2256/53. Class 39 (1). [Also in Group XL(b)] A cavity resonator 1 of the rhumbatron type for an electron beam tube comprises a tuning element 2 slidable within the re-entrant part of the cavity and connected to a diaphragm 4 which has a much greater radius than the cavity. In order to produce an effective short circuit at the entry 11 to the gap between the wall of the cavity and the member 2 this gap is made #/4 in length, and communicates with a radial cavity 5 of a length equal to an odd number of quarter wavelengths terminated by the conducting wall 10. The radial cavity is divided into annular zones 6 each of width #/ 4 and of alternately wide and narrow cross-section. It is stated that the apparent impedance across the gap at 11 decreases as the number of #/4 sections increases.
