Abstract
A concentrated solution of alkali metal dichromate is treated at 50-65 DEG C. with concentrated sulphuric acid, preferably in the proportion of 3-4 mols of acid per mol of dichromate, and the precipitated crystals of chromic anhydride are separated from the solution and washed with a saturated solution of the alkali metal dichromate, the amount of washing solution being 0.05-0.2 times the weight of the precipitate. The washed crystals, which contain chromic anhydride and alkali metal bisulphate are useful for many purposes such as the treatment of certain metals. In order to obtain pure chromic anhydride, the washed crystals are heated to fusion and allowed to stratify into an upper layer of dross and a lower layer of pure chromic anhydride which is separately drawn off.
