Abstract
In the manufacture of methacrylamide by the action of sulphuric acid on acetone cyanhydrin, the reaction is effected at 110-130 DEG C., preferably at 110-120 DEG C., in presence of methacrylamide and is completed at a higher temperature of 115-160 DEG C., preferably at about 140 DEG C. The process is suitably performed continuously by passing the components continuously into a cooled mixing chamber containing a solution of methacrylamide. After the reaction is complete, the reaction solution is neutralized with ammonia when the methacrylamide separates out in the hot in an upper layer and a further amount is subsequently isolated from the lower layer. An example is is given.
