Abstract

The invention comprises 1b -formyl methylene - 2a - acetonyl - 4bb - methyl -8ab -perhydrophenanthrene-4, 7-dione, 16-#xhydroxy-18-nor-pregnane-3, 11, 20-trione and processes for the preparation thereof in which the 16, 17-ozonide of 17-methyl-18-nor-D-homoetiochol-16-ene-3, 11-dione is subjected to reduction to obtain the desired 1b -formylmethylene-2a -acetonyl -4bb -methyl-8ab -perhydrophenanthrene-4, 7-dione in solution which on evaporation gives 16#x-hydroxy -18-norpregna-3, 11, 20-trione. Reduction may be effected by zinc and acetic acid. Specification 943,957 also is referred to.
