Abstract
723,799. Sewing-machines. REDMAN, D., and STONE, L., [Representatives of REDMAN, L.], and REDMAN, Ltd., L. & D. Feb. 16, 1953 [Feb. 14, 1952], No. 4005/52. Class 112. A sewing-machine comprises a reciprocating needle 25; a slotted throat plate 23; a presser foot (not shown); a reciprocating feed dog 26; a guide tongue 28 which is attached to the feed dog and is movable in a slot in the throat plate, a face of the guide tongue being located in a vertical plane adjacent to and directed towards the needle and the leading edge of the guide tongue being forward of the needle; a resilient arm 14 fixed at one end so that its free end presses lightly upon the work table adjacent the needle; and a guide block 20 mounted on the free end of the arm 14, a side wall 21 of the block being spaced longitudinally from and directed oppositely to, but in approximately the same plane as, said face of the guide tongue, and a wedge shaped slot 22 being formed in the wall 21 with its thin end trailing. The feed dog is carried by a feed arm 27. The leading edge of the guide tongue is chamfered as at 32. The arm 14 is adjustably mounted to enable wall 21 to be aligned with the inner face of the guide tongue. The machine is used to effect french seaming between layers A and B of fabric sewn together along an edge seam 10, the layers being turned inside out to lie upon the top and bottom faces of block 20. When the material is fed towards the needle, slot 22 forces seam 10 towards the folded edge of the material, and said edge is guided by the inner face of tongue 28 to lie at a constant distance from the second seam being formed by the needle.
