Abstract
723,687. Cutting glass rods and tubes. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., DAVIDSON, T. R. N., and SCRUTON, A. H. June 10, 1953 [June 10, 1952]. No. 14601/52. Class 56. In apparatus for cutting to exact length precut lengths of glass rod or tube, the precut lengths are delivered, transversely, on to a series of endless conveyers 1 having push fingers 9 and the precut lengths are engaged by skew endless bands 17 and a conical roller 32 whereby they are moved, axially into engagement with an abutment plate 15 and held thereagainst during their forward movement. The tubes or rods are then severed by cutters 23 which may be as described in Specification 709,402. If the tubes &c. are to be cut at their midpoint also they are centralized by other skew bands 39 and a cutter 47 similar to the others is brought into action. The two halves are then separated by oppositely rotating conical rollers 55. Instead of skew bands inclined rollers may be used. The means for feeding the precut lengths to the apparatus may include the transfer mechanism described in Specification 723,685. The accurately cut lengths of tubing may be used as the envelopes of tubular fluorescent lamps.
