A molybdenum or iron grid, such as gauze or a spiral, is arranged to check oscillations of the surface of the mercury cathode of an electric discharge tube. The grid is fixed in position within the valve or is allowed to float on the mercury. The valve is suitable for use as a pulse generator for radar and may consist of a glass bulb which contains hydrogen at a pressure of one and a half atmospheres.
