Abstract
Iron, steel or nickel is heated in contact with or in proximity to one or more of the elements Cr, Mo, W, V, Mn, Zr, Ti, Al, Si and Cu or an alloy containing one or more of these elements at a temperature of at least 850 DEG C., preferably 900-1150 DEG C., in an atmosphere substantially free from hydrogen halides and containing not more than four parts by volume of hydrogen per part of substantially inert gas, and in the presence of a halide of an alkali metal or of an alkaline earth metal. The inert gas may be helium but is preferably nitrogen, in which case the atmosphere may be provided by the use of ammonia gas or by means of an alkaline earth amide or hydrazine. In examples, halides used include potassium iodide, sodium chloride, potassium bromide and sodium fluoride; iodides are preferred. Specifications 646,637, 646,638 and 672,275 are referred to.
