Abstract

Boron hydrides are produced by reacting a boron halide with hydrogen in contact with a mass containing an alkali metal, an alkaline earth metal, magnesium, zinc or aluminium, the reaction being conducted at a temperature of 200-400 DEG C. The contact mass may comprise a mixture or an alloy of the specified metals, an alloy of a specified metal with a different metal, e.g. an alloy of aluminium and nickel, or a mixture of specified metal and alloy. The mass may also contain an inorganic salt, e.g. sodium chloride, cuprous chloride or calcium chloride, capable of forming with the halide of the metal a product, e.g. a eutectic mixture, which is liquid at the temperature of the reaction between the boron halide and hydrogen. An unstable compound, diborane monohalide, is formed during the reaction.
