Abstract

722,715. Making containers; soldering; welding by pressure. O'KILL, E. G. T. Nov. 26, 1952 [Nov. 28, 1951; Aug. 1, 1952], Nos. 27952/51 and 12610/52. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). In jointing copper vessels comprising a tubular body portion and an end closure, e.g. water storage cylinders, tanks, &c., a capillary space is formed between the surfaces to be joined at least at a circumferential joint between the closure and the body, and a selffluxing brazing metal is applied to the joint, capillary attraction causing uniform flowing of the molten metal. The surfaces to be joined may be tacked together by cold welding, continuously or intermittently, along the length of the joint, by applying pressure preferably perpendicular to the surfaces, and such as not to cause a major loss of thickness of the metal, to temporarily hold the surface together and to form the capillary space between the surfaces adjacent the tacks. The surfaces to be joined may be roller swaged continuously along the length of the joint to temporarily hold the surfaces together and to form a capillary space. The longitudinal edges of a copper sheet forming the body of a hot water cylinder are bent over to form four thicknesses of metal which are compacted by hammering. The circumferential edges between the body and top and base respectively are swaged by rollers to form capillary spaces. The cylinder is placed on a turntable and is rotated while brazing metal, e.g. silver phosphorus or silver copper phosphorus alloy is applied to an edge of the capillary space. The joint is heated by a blowtorch and preheating by a gas flame or by electricity may be employed in advance of the molten brazing metal. The brazing metal is then applied to the longitudinal joint. Access to the capillary spaces may be at one edge of the space or through a hole in one of the surfaces to be joined. A foil strip or sheet of brazing metal may be sandwiched between the surfaces prior to tacking or swaging.
