Abstract
721,704. Roller-way conveyers. BILLINGTON, J. H. Sept. 4, 1953 [June 10, 1952; Oct. 11, 1952], Nos. 14542/52 and 25534/52. Class 78 (1). The load-carrying rollers have resilientlyloaded ball-bearing connections with the side frame members. Each end wall 21, Fig. 1, of the roller 20 has a central bore which receives one end of a tube 22. The other end of the tube is mounted in an annulus 28. A ball 26 mounted in the end of the tube and retained by a cage 31 engages a tapered hole 29 in the frame member 30. The tube contains plugs 23, 24 which are forced apart by a spring 25. Each roller 20 is engaged frictionally by a driving roller 32 or driving band. The pair of tubes 22 may be replaced by a single tube in which case the springs 25 bear on a common central plug. The roller 37, Fig. 4, has a curved flange 38 at each end and a ball 42 inserted between the ball 26 and the plug 40. The ball 42 may be omitted or replaced by a number of small balls which are seated in the concave end of the plug or located in a circular groove formed in the plane end of the plug. The rollers may be made of steel, compressed fibre or paper, wood, glass, nylon or a plastic material.
