[Also in Groups XII and XIII] Gases, e.g. the exhaust gases of an internalcombustion engine, fed into the lower end of a vertical pipe 1 are deflected downwardly by a cooling plate 4, having a depending flange 5, into a passage between the pipe 1 and a casing 3 and are mixed with a cooling liquid entering an inlet above the plate 4, e.g. an aperture 8 in a casing cover 6, and directed inwardly in the form of a jet by annular deflector means, such as a bulged portion 9 of the wall of the casing 3, disposed in the flow path of the liquid and around the wall of the casing. The lower edge of the flange 5 is arranged about and below the upper end of the pipe 1 and may be disposed adjacent the bulge 9 so that all or part of the liquid is directed onto the pipe, the angle of deflection of the liquid to the gas stream being between 20 and 45 degrees. The jet of liquid produces an extraction effect on the gases. The plate 4 may have spaced lugs 7, 12 and be held seated on the pipe 1 by the cover 6. The mixture of gases and liquid is discharged to waste through an outlet 10 in the casing ; alternatively, the liquid is separated from the gases and recirculated. Cast aluminium alloy may be used for the construction of the device, the pipe 1 being provided with a sleeve 13 of heat and erosion resistant material such as stainless steel. A drain 11 may be provided in the bottom of the casing. The device may form part of the exhaust manifold of an engine.
