721,473. Reservoir pens. OSMIOR. Feb. 25, 1952 '[Feb. 5, 1952], No. 4897/52. Class 146 (3). In a tubular ink reservoir for a ball-point pen having a follower or free piston capable of resting on and following the motion of the column of ink in the reservoir and formed of a substance of pasty consistency immiscible with the ink, the substance has the properties of keeping its pasty consistency until the ink is consumed, a specific gravity substantially equal to that of the ink, a mean penetration index at 25‹C. (A.S.T.M. Index 217-44) between 200 and 300, and a molecular attraction higher than that between its molecules and those of the ink or the wall of the reservoir. The inside diameter of the reservoir may be from 3 to 10 mm., and the substance of the follower may be a mixture of 78 to 82 per cent. dimethylpolysiloxane or the like alkyl derivative of a polysiloxane with 22 to 18 per cent. silica gel. The substance is injected under pressure over the ink in the reservoir. Prior to the injection of the substance, the wall of the reservoir above the ink is lubricated with a product having a low viscosity, such as neat's foot oil, which prevents the adhesives of the substance of the follower to the wall.
