Abstract

722,448. Reservoir pens. VERMES, G. April 17, 1952 [July 27, 1951], No. 9735/52. Class 146 (3). In a ball-point pen the ink reservoir 1 is open at the end remote from the ball 3 and contains oily ink 4, and a follower sealing element 5 on the ink meniscus consists of a viscous material not miscible with the ink and is a wholly or mainly a gel which is water-attractive and non-miscible with oil. The element 5 may be a film of glue, gelatin, agar-agar, tragacanth, pectin, carrageen moss, Icelandic moss, or gum arabic, and has about ten per cent. sodium chloride or other hydrophile material dissolved therein. As shown, the reservoir 4 is removablysecured in a barrel 9 closed by a cover 6 having air-inlet passages 7. and a plug 8, through which air can pass, is fitted into the open end of the reservoir. In a modification, the pen barrel forms the ink reservoir which may be more than 5 mm. diameter, and the ball housing is removable. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 669,973.
