Abstract

721,140. Furniture joints. HAMILTON, B. F. Sept. 23, 1953 [April 6, 1953], No. 26235/53. Class 52 (2). In a chair &c. the back is provided with a pair of laterally spaced openings through which pass the ends of back-supporting members in such a manner that parts of such members engage the front and rear faces of the back, the supporting members being then secured to the base. As shown the supporting members 44 comprise portions 46 for securement to the base constituted by the legs 14 and portions 52 which constitute the chair arms. The back 20 comprises a rear pan 22 to which is secured in spaced relation a pad 30 and pad pan 26. A pair of openings 36 are provided in the rear pan 22 and the rear ends of the chair arms are flattened and turned inwardly at 54 towards each other. The inwardly-turned parts comprise a portion 58 engaging the rear face of the pan 22 a portion 60 which passes through the opening 36 and a portion 62 which engages the front face of the pan 22. The arm members 52 are engaged with the back 20 as shown in Fig. 3 in dotted lines and are then swung forwardly and secured to the base by studs 48. The parts 62, 58 are disposed in such a manner as to produce stress in the arm members after being secured in position.
