Abstract
721,112. Switching systems; transformer systems. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. July 28, 1953 [July 31, 1952], No. 20899/53. Class 38 (4). In a variable voltage supply system for an aerodrome lighting, or other, load 10, comprising a potentiometer or transformer winding 3 having tappings to which the load may be selectively connected by contacts 7-9 of relays 14-16 which are individually operated by manual switches 20-22 in an A.C. control circuit including the coils 17-19 of the relays, short-circuits between the tappings, due to failure of a relay to release when changing from one voltage to another, is prevented by the provision of (a) an acceptor circuit 23, 24 in the common lead to the relay coils, and (b) auxiliary relay contacts 25-27 adapted to short-circuit the condenser 24 of the acceptor circuit when any relay pull-in, thereby reducing the voltage across the coil of the operated relay to a holding value which is insufficient to allow actuation of another of the relays should the first relay fail to release upon opening of its appropriate switch 20-22. The impedance of the reactor 23 may be approximately equal to that of the separate relay coils in the deenergized condition of the relays.
