724,637. Switching systems; transformer systems. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Aug. 26, 1953 [Aug. 29, 1952], No. 23568/53. Class 38 (4). In a variable voltage supply system for an aerodrome lighting, or other, load 10 as described in Specification 721,112, the manuallyoperated switches 20-22 controlling the tapchanging relays 14-16 are now in the form of push-buttons and the relays have further auxiliary contacts 28-30 which maintain the relay energized after release of the associated push button. Further, the ratio of the impedance of the coil of an operated relay to its impedance in the inoperative condition of the relay is now made such that the voltage reduction across the coil of an operated relay consequent upon the connection in parallel therewith of the coil of an unoperated relay is sufficient to cause release of the operated relay, so that the condenser 24 becomes effective to boost the coil current of the unoperated relay to a pull-in value and so effect a tap change. A tuning condenser 31 automatically switched across any operated relay assists in obtaining the necessary impedance ratio. The push buttons may be located remote from the relays, say at 33, necessitating long connecting leads 32, in which case compensation for voltage loss in the leads may be obtained by arranging that the overall reactance of the series-connected elements 23, 24 is capacitative and resonates with the inductive reactance of any relay in its unoperated condition.
