721,072. X-ray apparatus. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Nov. 14, 1952 [Nov. 17, 1951], No. 28770/52. Class 98 (1). In a medical X-ray examination device including an electronic image intensifier or converter in which the image is viewed through an eyepiece, the eyepiece is secured to a periscope which moves with the image intensifier to allow lateral displacement of the point of observation in such a manner that the direction of viewing remains in a plane at right angles to the image plane. As shown, a movable carriage 3 supports an X-ray tube 9 below the table 1 for the patient 2, and an electronic image intensifier 5 above the table. Light from the screen of the intensifier is reflected at 13 along an arm 14 parallel to the intensifier screen to a mirror 15 and eyepiece 6 which are rotatable in a plane perpendicular to arm 14. A strut 16 connects arm 14 to the support 4 for the image intensifier 5. Reflector 13 may be retractable or partly transparent so that the screen may be photographed by a photographic or kinematograph camera on the axis of the image intensifier.
