Abstract

554,699. R÷ntgen-ray apparatus. PHILIPS LAMPS, Ltd., and BAKER, W. E, Jan. 14, 1942, No. 574. [Class 98 (i)] Radiographs are produced by effecting instantaneous excitation of the X-ray tube to produce an image on a fluorescent screen giving a persistent image, and then photographing the persistent image. The image may be thereafter obliterated by flooding the screen with infra-red radiation. Apparatus employing persistent image screens for visual X-ray screen examination is also described and claimed. Fig. 2 shows an apparatus in which the persistent image formed on a screen 24 by instantaneous excitation of the tube 21 is photographed by a miniature camera 25. The screen, which may have a persistance of the order of one or two seconds without appreciable image deterioration, is of twice the length required for each photograph and is slidably mounted so that either half can be brought into operative position while the other lies within one of two lateral enclosures 29, where it is subjected to infra-red radiation from a lamp to obliterate any residual image in readiness for the next exposure. Fig. 1 shows an apparatus for visual examination in mutually perpendicular directions, for example in examining hip-joint fractures. and comprising vertical and horizontal persistent image screens 14, 12 respectively, the latter being slidably mounted in a housing 10. After images have been formed on both screens by a single movable X-ray tube, or by two tubes at right-angles, the screen 12 may be withdrawn and the images on the two screens compared. The housing 10 may be replaced by an interchangeable fluoroscope and cassette holder as described in Specification 548,999, and the screen 14 may also be enclosed.
