720,447. Winding yarn. MASCHINENFABRIK SCHWEITER AKT.-GES. Nov. 6, 1952 [Nov. 21,1951], No. 27948/52. Class 120 (2). A device for attachment to winding units of automatic weft winding machines for cutting off the thread end trapped between the unit driving head and the butt of the pirn 2, is characterised in that an arm 11 is pivotally mounted on a stud 7 parallel to the axis of the head, the arm 11 carrying rigidly a spindle 12 having thereon a friction roller 16, preferably mounted on ball bearings, to which a circular knife 20, which may have a toothed edge, is concentrically fitted, a control device 9, 10 operated by the traverse device of the unit being provided for the arm 11, which control device causes the arm 11, after the winding of a number of base-forming coils of the pirn, to be swivelled towards the butt of the pirn so that the friction roller 16 comes into contact with the butt and is set in rotation to drive the knife 20 to cut the thread laid over the butt of the pirn. The roller 16 is preferably formed with a rim 19 engaging between rings on the butt of the pirn. Specification 543,373 is referred to.
