720,414. Platen presses for paper-board. SHAW & SONS (SALFORD), Ltd., J. May 15, 1953 [May 23, 1952], No. 13066/52. Class 96. A press, for hard paper-boards, which may be an assembly of e.g. 4 units, has one or both platens of each unit formed as a screen, as by wedge-section wires 37, Fig. 4, wound about bolts 40 secured to clamping-bars 34, thus forming suction openings 42 communicating with grooves 32, openings 36 and suction conduits 33. The openings 42 extend in the direction in which the boards are passed through the press, e.g. by an endless felt 50, Fig. 1, the upper and lower runs of which pass above and below a floating platen 21, and all the end rollers, &c., 45, 48, &c., of which rise and fall with a crosshead 19. The felt 50 may have a metal indicator 55 passing magnetic switches to ensure that the seam or join in the felt always comes to rest outside the press. There may be an upper press felt 53, its slack being taken up by springs 54 when the press closes. Boards may be pressed above and below the floating platen 21 and may be released, after pressing, by compressed air. Modifications comprise different forms of edge-seals.
