Abstract
720,183. Belt fastenings. BRITISH TYRE & RUBBER CO., Ltd., BOWDEN, W., and ACKERS, H. Jan. 13, 1953 [Oct. 26, 1951]. No. 25142/51. Class 80 (1). In order to join by vulcanization the ends of belting comprising a core of cables 1 (such as brass-plated steel wires) embedded in rubber or the like on each side of which core is a ply 2 of fabric and an outer layer 4 of rubber, particularly for conveyers, each end of the belt is treated by cutting back the outer rubber and fabric at one face to expose the wires, cutting back the wires for a distance A to expose the other fabric, coating the exposed faces with unvulcanized rubber solution and placing a strip 6 of unvulcanized rubber along the ends of the wires. The two ends are then positioned face to face as a scarf joint, the wires 1 overlapping for a distance B, rubber strips are placed in the gaps 8 and on the application of heat and pressure the belt ends are joined by vulcanization. The cuts made are preferably inclined to the sides of the belt. The wires normally overlap in such a way as to increase belt thickness at the joint, but they may interfit in suitable cases. In a modification the wires may be cut back in staggered relation. The term " rubber " is intended to include natural and synthetic rubbers and like plastic materials such as polyvinyl chloride. In the latter case vulcanization is not employed, but heat and pressure are applied to gel the polyvinyl chloride.
