Abstract

A basic refractory insulating brick having a porosity greater than 35 per cent. by volume is obtained by pressing and thereafter firing a mixture containing a foundation material preponderantly as grains not exceeding 2 mms. and which by firing forms the fundamental refractory structure of the brick, and a carbonate preponderantly as grains between 1.7 and 6 mms. and which has a CO2 content of about 50 per cent. by weight and which by the firing becomes a refractory oxide and which is present in sufficient amount to give the desired porosity. Specified foundation materials are chromite, magnesia, calcined chalk, zirconia, titania, thoria, and old brick rubble, whilst the carbonate includes magnesite, dolomite (which may be stabilized) and limestone. Temporary binders, e.g. sulphite liquor, can be added before pressing, and for greater porosity in the finished brick combustible materials e.g. tar, can be added. Magnesium sulphate may also be used as a binder. Specification 657,498 is referred to.
