Class 23 Solids are removed from liquid in a separator comprising a rapidly rotating casing 1 enclosing a slowly rotating drum 11 having cells 12 at the periphery for receiving the mixture to be separated and in which the solids collect, the drum being enclosed by an outer drum 15 attached to the casing and having outlets for the separated solids and liquid connected to outlets in the casing. The casing is rotated in bearings 2, 3 by a pulley 4. The drum 11 rotates about a shaft 14 journalled in the casing, the drive being a fixed shaft 5 gearing 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, and teeth 10<SP>1</SP> on the drum engaged by the gears 10. The mixture is supplied by an inlet 22 having nozzles 24 discharging into the cells. The solids discharge from the cells at places lying in the plane containing the axes of the drum and casing (as described in Specifications 396,821 and 436,895). pass through passages 28 in the outer drum. and are discharged from the casing to collecting troughs 29. The liquid collects in the inner and outer drums as shown in Figs. 1. 2 and is discharged by nozzles 26 to a collector 27. The outer drum is formed from two parts joined by flanges 30, and is strengthened against centrifugal loading by a partition 17 integral with the inlet. In a modification the wall of the outer drum is perforated.
