Abstract
718,599. Universal joints. DUNLOP RUBBER CO., Ltd. April 23, 1952 [May 16, 1951], No. 11396/51 Class 80 (2) A flexible coupling, in which the spring rate of the resilient element rises as the angular deflection increases, comprises coaxial tubular members of regular hexagonal form surface-bonded at their adjacent faces to an intermediate rubber element. As shown, a coupling member 2, formed as a hexagonal plate with flanged edges 5, 6 press-fitted and spot-welded to the outer and inner surfaces of hexagonal tubes 4, 3, is resiliently connected by rubber layers 13, 14, 15 to a similar coupling member 8 attached tc hexagonal tubes 9, 10. The thickness of each rubber layer is arranged to be greater than that of the adjacent inner layer to secure an even distriibution of stress when transmitting torque. Studs 17 are welded to the members 2, 8 for connection to coaxial flanges on the shafts to be coupled.
